Cleaning your boat rigorously before self-storage
Its exterior should be cleaned paying detail to salt deposits which would act on the finishing when the boat is not in constant usage. Make sure to remove all debris that could have accumulated over time including oil and dirt. After you are assured that the boat is at its best cover the entire boat with a firm of wax on its deck, top layer and at its bottom. The wax holds in the moisture and acts as a protection from particles and dust that may enter the storage unit. The boat interior should also be spotless with no moisture retained in the fish storage region, live wells, lockers, and drawers. Storage of the boat with moisture in these places would lead to the growth of mildew and mold. For a more comprehensive cleaning, you can remove all the removable components of the boat and install them back once done. Other sensitive areas are under the cushions, on the seats and carpet.
Disconnect the battery before storage
When the boat is inactive for long periods its battery loses energy and slowly dies off. To ensure a long battery life it is plausible to unplug the cables from the terminals. Wipe the cables and the terminals and apply Vaseline on them for added protection. Do not leave the battery on the ground as this would drain all its energy, store it on an elevated platform and charge it after every month to keep it functional.
Maintenance practices on the boat’s engine before storage
If the engine is left exposed when the boat is in storage its functions will deteriorate hence presenting mechanical complications afterward. To prevent this one is advised to incorporate a stabilizer to the engine, a full inspection of strainers and belts and also ensuring that the gas tank is full. Filling the tank prevents condensation within the tank. Other practices include lubricating the engine components and changing the oil prior to storage. With these practices, your boat will be able to sustain the proper function of its engine even after months of storage.
Blocking the exhaust port
When in storage the exhaust can be a breeding point for pests and insects hence it is advisable to completely seal it. The boat should be stored in a covered storage unit without direct access and one should check on it from time to time to ensure it is in perfect condition in the period of storage.
